Gameplay Deep Dive: Rotation

Welcome to our first Gameplay Deep Dive – a format where we introduce planned gameplay features and gather your feedback, input, ideas, and suggestions. These blogs are written before development, leaving plenty of design space for changes and improvements – your perfect chance to help shape the game!

We’ll revisit these deep dives after implementing the first version of each feature, sharing our thoughts on your feedback, what we implemented, and why some suggestions didn’t make it in.

But enough talking – let’s dive!

We understand that simply watching this footage might feel overwhelming and could even cause some motion sickness. However, after extensive testing, we found that actually playing feels completely different and doesn’t trigger these effects!

Here’s an early look at our rotation mechanic – a new and unique way to move and explore the world! It adds a fresh experience while staying true to what makes a Metroidvania a Metroidvania, opening up exciting new design possibilities. This feature will greatly enhance level and boss design while also giving abilities, enemies, and pretty much the whole game a new twist.

How does it work?

Press the rotation key/button to open the rotation wheel and easily choose your direction (North, East, South [Cancel], West). As you fall after rotating, you can activate your rotation ability – crash down like a meteor to burn hordes of enemies or make yourself and your party member invulnerable to dodge those nasty crowd controls.

Customization of your rotation ability will be a key part of character progression – but more on that in an upcoming blog, where we’ll dive deeper into our itemization system!
